In the City of Meridian, Idaho, elections for City Council are held every two years, with three out of the six seats up for election. The election for the Mayor is held every four years. Both City Council members and the Mayor serve four-year terms of office. The next election for City Council Districts 2, 3, 4 (two-year term), District 5, and the Mayor will take place on November 7, 2023.
It's important to note that while all Meridian residents will be able to vote for a Mayoral candidate, not all residents will vote for a City Council representative. The City Council Elections by District will begin in November 2023. This change in the election process is a result of Meridian's population surpassing 100,000 people in the latest census. The purpose of districting is to ensure that each City Council Member represents a similar number of constituents.
To establish the City Council districts, an independent committee was formed in April 2022. This committee reviewed census data and other factors to create a proposed map of the six City Council districts. The proposed map was approved by the Committee and subsequently adopted by the City Council on June 28, 2022. Historic Council seat numbers were also aligned with the adopted Districts under Ordinance 22-1988, adopted on August 16, 2022. The final map can be found here.
The Meridian District Map was completed by August 2022, allowing potential candidates and voters enough time to familiarize themselves with the districts and plan accordingly for the upcoming election.
