The City of Meridian values and appreciates arts and culture as it enhances livability, spurs the economy, and celebrates the many creative assets in our community. Therefore, in 2006, the Meridian Arts Commission (MAC) was established to advise the mayor and city council on issues and policies related to arts and culture and promote public awareness and participation in the arts. The Meridian Arts Commission shall consist of at least five members but not more than nine. All members are appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council. Terms are three years with the exception of the youth members who serves one year. Meetings are held at 3:30 pm on the second Thursday of each month in the City Council Chamber at Meridian City Hall.
The Meridian Arts Commission and its appointed members meet regularly and work to support and enrich Meridian’s quality of life and vibrancy through arts and culture. One of the commission’s most significant programs is its ongoing curation of Meridian’s Initial Point Gallery on the third floor of Meridian City Hall in downtown Meridian. The gallery is filled with natural light and allows for the display of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork. It features a rotating series of exhibits showcasing a diverse array of local, regional and national artists, and is free and open to the public during Meridian City Hall’s regular weekday business hours. For more information on the gallery and its current and upcoming exhibits visit: meridiancity.org/gallery/.
Public art is also a priority of the Meridian Arts Commission; it contributes to our community’s identity, fosters civic pride and gives our city a unique sense of place. From murals on buildings and sculptures in parks to artfully-wrapped traffic boxes, public art pieces are becoming increasingly visible throughout Meridian. A digital tour and interactive map of Meridian’s public art installations can be accessed at meridiancity.org/publicart.
The Meridian Arts Commission also promotes a variety of events throughout the year, including Meridian Art Week and the popular Concerts on Broadway live music series.
