This year has been a difficult one where we have seen businesses close their doors, kids have been kept home, our favorite events have been canceled, travel has been postponed, and gatherings with loved ones have been missed. Many of us had smaller Thanksgiving meals as family and friends stayed home this past weekend. This was tough for us all and with Christmas and other holidays coming up, this season is bound to be emotional as we are so used to being together during this time of year.   

The holidays are not cancelled in Meridian, nor is the spirit and goodwill that come with them. Our City staff have gone above and beyond to make sure the spirit of the season stays alive this year. With a little creativity, some innovation, and a lot of love, they’ve put together a Christmas in Meridian lineup that serves up holiday cheer while keeping the community safe.  

The whole world has gone virtual, so it only makes sense that Santa has too! Meridian children are invited to “Zoom with Santa” where they can enjoy a few minutes to chat with the big guy himself. As in years past, wishes can also be submitted by letter in the mailbox set up at City Hall Plaza – all lines lead straight to the North Pole! This year, the crafts that our kids typically enjoy at the Winter Carnival will be bagged up and ready to take home for families to enjoy as well.  

While our usual Holiday Lights Parade isn’t possible this year, you can take a parade of your own around town, touring all of the incredible home light displays with our convenient map. Artists of all ages and abilities are also invited to create a Christmas ornament to drop downtown for a stranger to find. While you’re downtown, don’t forget to check out that amazing Christmas tree in Generations Plaza that will be lit in all its glory via a livestream on Friday. 

I’m sure if we compared our lists for Santa this year, we would all have the same thing at the top. We all want to forget about 2020 and return to normal. My wish this year is for all of us to keep working together to ensure a better 2021, where we can get back to the things we all enjoy as soon as possible without risking the lives of our loved ones, neighbors and fellow community members. Let’s keep the spirit of Christmas alive and well in Meridian and do our part to slow the spread of COVID in our community.
