Each year we take a moment to recognize Meridian residents and businesses who demonstrate a commitment to preserving, maintaining, and improving the quality of life and safety in neighborhoods and the wider community through the Meridian Stars Awards. This past week we were able to celebrate a few of our shining residents and businesses who were nominated by the community. One thing they all have in common, is their deep sense of Meridian spirit and a purpose to serve others. Let’s take a moment to celebrate those individuals and businesses that truly make our city shine.

Youth of the Year – Hoyoon Song

Our journey began with the acknowledgment of a remarkable young leader, Hoyoon Song, named the Youth of the Year. Hoyoon's dedication to our community is nothing short of inspiring. From his involvement on the City’s Transportation Commission to his leadership in the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council, Hoyoon exemplifies the spirit of service and civic engagement among our youth. His words resonated with passion as he shared his motivations for making Meridian a better place for everyone.

Senior of the Year – Patsy Gardner

Next, we celebrated Patsy Gardner, our Senior of the Year, a living testament to a lifelong commitment to service. In her mid-80s, Patsy continues to deliver meals to those in need through the Meals on Wheels program, showcasing the unwavering volunteer spirit that defines Meridian. Patsy's heartfelt words reminded all of us, of the power of service and the impact it can have on the lives of others.

Neighbors of the Year – Carol & Elden Leavitt

A round of applause filled the room as we recognized the Neighbors of the Year, Carol and Elden Leavitt. This charming couple, who have called Meridian home for 50 years, epitomize the essence of good neighbors. Their acts of kindness, from sharing their bountiful garden harvest to opening their home to friends and strangers alike, paint a beautiful picture of community warmth and generosity.

Small Business of the Year – Loose Screw Beer Co.

Moving on to the business front, we celebrated Loose Screw Beer Co., our Small Business of the Year. Owned by the dynamic duo, Mike and Pam Garcia, this brewery has become a hub for community engagement. Their commitment to creating a family-friendly space and giving back to groups such as the Meridian Arts Commission go hand in hand. Their efforts have truly enriched the fabric of our city.

Large Business of the Year – Berkeley Building Co.

Our Large Business of the Year is Berkeley Building Co. whose commitment to philanthropy and community support on the local and national level is truly commendable. From their contributions building playhouses for Make-A-Wish to making the St. Jude’s Dream home a reality for more than a decade, they showcase a commitment to making Meridian a better place for everyone.

Mayor’s Star of the Year – Tom & Bonnie Carns

Last but certainly not least, the Mayor's Star of the Year award went to Tom and Bonnie Carns. This dynamic couple, who are both longtime local business owners, personify the spirit of community. Their selfless acts, from landscaping assistance to nurturing young professionals, highlight the extraordinary efforts they make to keep Meridian safer, better, and more enjoyable for all.
